We’re switching gears a little bit and talking about FAMILY VACATION. I’m talking with Stephanie Rohlfs, Vacation expert and VIP Disney tour guide.
Steph has been with the Disney company in the parks for 11 years, she does behind the scenes guides, and she also takes families on boutique vacations all over the world. She also happens to be my sister.
She talks about the things you absolutely need to do in order to have a fun and effective family vacation. We talk about common mistakes people make on vacation, the dos the don’ts, and answering that question of, do any families fight on vacation? Because I need to know we’re not the only ones!
Near the end of the interview we also touch on a few Disney secrets and insider tips, just in case you’re planning a vacation there anytime soon, or you’re just a Disney nerd like me.

How to have an effective and fun family vacation…
Do Your Research
Get information about the place you’re visiting! There are so many resources: Google, Facebook groups, asking locals. Book a few reservations in advance (dinner, shows, etc.) and then build your stay around those.
Be Flexible with Your Plans
Don’t schedule your trip out, minute by minute. Allow time for flexibility. If you’re at the beach or near a pool and especially enjoying your time there, be willing to have the flexibility to cancel other plans. Allow yourself time to relax!
Bring Less “Stuff” with You
Especially with young kids, the temptation is strong to bring extra toys and things to do. Challenge yourself and your family to only bring the bare essentials and enjoy being ‘unplugged’ as much as you can during your trip.
Ask for Help
Don’t be afraid to ask other visitors and even locals for help. If you’re in a foreign country, be willing to ask directions and help from people who may know timing, routes, and interesting activities better than you.
Stephanie also encourages us to be friendly to the staff (“cast members”) helping you. A smile and a friendly conversation go a LONG WAY in making a smooth vacation; maybe with a few extra “perks” if you’re in the right place at the right time, with the right attitude toward the staff.
NAPS and SNACKS
Take them. Build breaks into your day. Just like when you’re at work, you need to take breaks. Play is no different! a quick, 20 minute “siesta” can change your evening (and your kids’ evening) dramatically and make for a more enjoyable time.
Bring snacks wherever you go! It will save you time and money. Most places allow small snacks and water.
