Episode 17: Race, Racial Healing, and Practicing Anti-Racism in our Families, with Dr. Lucretia Berry

May 13, 2019

Today we’re talking about race, racism, and how to bring love to what can be a very charged subject and conversation in our society today.

This is a subject that t I’ve wanted to talk about almost since I started the show. But I didn’t know how, and I certainly didn’t know who to ask, or how to ask them when I finally found them. Luckily I found Dr. Lucretia Berry, whose mission to me, is to bring the exact voice that we need.

Lucretia is the co-founder of Brownicity – Many Hues, One Humanity (brownicity.com), an agency dedicated to advocacy, education and support for racial healing and antiracism. She is a wife to Nathan, mother of three little girls, and a former college professor, whose passion for oneness led her to author  What LIES Between Us: Fostering First Steps Towards Racial Healing, a curriculum guide designed specifically for ‘beginners’ (like me) to learning about race/ism. She’s had the honor of being a speaker for TEDx Charlotte and Q Ideas Charlotte (2017). Currently, she is a contributor for (in)courage.me, and is on staff at the Community School of Davidson (NC) supporting their school-wide Broadening Perspectives initiative.

When I asked Lucretia to be a guest on the show, she asked what I wanted to talk about. I stumbled through my answer, and told her I hoped that she would take the lead. I just know that I want to learn how to bring a language of love and peace to the ethnicity discussion, have an honest discussion about the beauty of our differences and how we can celebrate one another and influence our families and our community to do the same.

The conversation about “race” is so charged…how do we be the change we want to see? Lucretia is so gracious with me and with my questions, and she brings such beauty and honesty, and such useful answers to the questions that, I think, can sometimes be scary to ask in the climate we’re currently in.

I hope you listen to this show with an open heart, and I hope it brings a desire to learn more and a desire to understand and be intentional about the things we talk about, in your own community.
