Episode 19: Chatting with My Daughter

May 27, 2019

You all need to know that this is a very special guest on the show today! I convinced my almost-15-year-old daughter, Abby, to chat with me for a few minutes about her first year of high school, cheerleading, and a little something every mom should know.

We talk about her plans and interests, and an interesting statistic she learned about teenagers during the summer, and how she plans to prevent it.

I love this girl, and it was so fun to have her on the show!

Hey ladies, Valuing yourself is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO FOR ANYONE IN YOUR LIFE. We’ve gotten it all wrong, us moms. We think we’re supposed to be serving everyone else, and we’ve somehow placed our value and our worth into the roles we play and who we are to other people.
But the only way to truly take care of our marriages, our kids, our friends, our community, is to pour into ourselves.  We can love others well out of the OVERFLOW of a love of and for ourselves. And I’m here to help.

If you’re not sure where to start with this whole self compassion and love yourself thing, I have a FREE DOWNLOAD that will help you get started.

Print, stick it on your mirror, on your dashboard, above the changing table, on your computer, in your journal….you get it…and remind yourself of all that you’re capable of.

I am confident that the kinder we are to ourselves, the more we take notice of ourselves and take the time to speak love and life in our hearts and minds, the more we can change the world around us.

Episode 18: Confession Session

May 20, 2019

It’s episode number 18, y’all. Welcome back. Today I am doing what I’m now officially calling a confession session. I’m talking about more than how long it’s been since I’ve shaved my legs – although, let’s be honest, it’s kind of a fun game for me, shaving my legs and figuring out outfits that cover up just how long it’s been. I’m opening up and talking about some of my biggest fears and the things that I’m working through that I haven’t quite figured out yet. After all, this show IS called Confessions of a Super Mom Wannabe, right?

I don’t know how this is going to go, but if you resonate with any part of it, or you want to hear more of these types of episodes, will you get in touch with me and let me know? I’d love to know what you’re loving about the show and what I can do better for you.  You can reach me on social media, or at hello@thesupermomwannabe.com.

Episode 17: Race, Racial Healing, and Practicing Anti-Racism in our Families, with Dr. Lucretia Berry

May 13, 2019

Today we’re talking about race, racism, and how to bring love to what can be a very charged subject and conversation in our society today.

This is a subject that t I’ve wanted to talk about almost since I started the show. But I didn’t know how, and I certainly didn’t know who to ask, or how to ask them when I finally found them. Luckily I found Dr. Lucretia Berry, whose mission to me, is to bring the exact voice that we need.

Lucretia is the co-founder of Brownicity – Many Hues, One Humanity (brownicity.com), an agency dedicated to advocacy, education and support for racial healing and antiracism. She is a wife to Nathan, mother of three little girls, and a former college professor, whose passion for oneness led her to author  What LIES Between Us: Fostering First Steps Towards Racial Healing, a curriculum guide designed specifically for ‘beginners’ (like me) to learning about race/ism. She’s had the honor of being a speaker for TEDx Charlotte and Q Ideas Charlotte (2017). Currently, she is a contributor for (in)courage.me, and is on staff at the Community School of Davidson (NC) supporting their school-wide Broadening Perspectives initiative.

When I asked Lucretia to be a guest on the show, she asked what I wanted to talk about. I stumbled through my answer, and told her I hoped that she would take the lead. I just know that I want to learn how to bring a language of love and peace to the ethnicity discussion, have an honest discussion about the beauty of our differences and how we can celebrate one another and influence our families and our community to do the same.

The conversation about “race” is so charged…how do we be the change we want to see? Lucretia is so gracious with me and with my questions, and she brings such beauty and honesty, and such useful answers to the questions that, I think, can sometimes be scary to ask in the climate we’re currently in.

I hope you listen to this show with an open heart, and I hope it brings a desire to learn more and a desire to understand and be intentional about the things we talk about, in your own community.

Episode 16: Family Vacationing the RIGHT Way, with Stephanie Rohlfs

May 8, 2019

We’re switching gears a little bit and talking about FAMILY VACATION. I’m talking with Stephanie Rohlfs, Vacation expert and VIP Disney tour guide.

Steph has been with the Disney company in the parks for 11 years, she does behind the scenes guides, and she also takes families on boutique vacations all over the world. She also happens to be my sister.

She talks about the things you absolutely need to do in order to have a fun and effective family vacation.  We talk about common mistakes people make on vacation, the dos the don’ts, and answering that question of, do any families fight on vacation? Because I need to know we’re not the only ones!

Near the end of the interview we also touch on a few Disney secrets and insider tips, just in case you’re planning a vacation there anytime soon, or you’re just a Disney nerd like me.

How to have an effective and fun family vacation…

Do Your Research

Get information about the place you’re visiting! There are so many resources: Google, Facebook groups, asking locals. Book a few reservations in advance (dinner, shows, etc.) and then build your stay around those.

Be Flexible with Your Plans

Don’t schedule your trip out, minute by minute. Allow time for flexibility. If you’re at the beach or near a pool and especially enjoying your time there, be willing to have the flexibility to cancel other plans. Allow yourself time to relax!

Bring Less “Stuff” with You

Especially with young kids, the temptation is strong to bring extra toys and things to do. Challenge yourself and your family to only bring the bare essentials and enjoy being ‘unplugged’ as much as you can during your trip.

Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask other visitors and even locals for help. If you’re in a foreign country, be willing to ask directions and help from people who may know timing, routes, and interesting activities better than you.

Stephanie also encourages us to be friendly to the staff (“cast members”) helping you. A smile and a friendly conversation go a LONG WAY in making a smooth vacation; maybe with a few extra “perks” if you’re in the right place at the right time, with the right attitude toward the staff.

NAPS and SNACKS

Take them. Build breaks into your day. Just like when you’re at work, you need to take breaks. Play is no different! a quick, 20 minute “siesta” can change your evening (and your kids’ evening) dramatically and make for a more enjoyable time.

Bring snacks wherever you go! It will save you time and money. Most places allow small snacks and water.
